Marijuana Legalization And The Presidential Election

January 22, 2016

United States Senate advocates Rand Paul, Kirsten Gillibrand and Cory Booker proposed bipartisan cannabis legislation known as the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States Act (CARERS Act). The supporters of the bill are affiliated with the Carers rights movement responsible for addressing social issues like low income, social exclusion, and mental and physical health concerns. The bill is waiting on Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of Senate Judiciary Committee for approval but he has not signed the legislation. It’s important to note that last month the Federal budget amendment’s additional provisions miming those of Carers did not pass the budgetary course in the House. Specifically, the McLintock/Polic amendment did not get passed and this would have ensured the Federal government’s compliance and adherence to state medical cannabis laws.

Marijuana reform is an important issue and is popular amongst presidential candidates who are supporting its legalization. Americans who want to see cannabis laws change should:

  1. Focus on Chuck Grassley’s re-election as his sixth term as Iowa Senator is up for re-election this year.

  2. Pay attention to the presidential election and research candidates like Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders and understand their stance in the marijuana legalization process.

  3. Get involved in the political system. Understand that lately democrats have been winning higher-turnout elections while Republicans dominate lower-turnout midterms so this election could be the push marijuana advocates need to decriminalize weed altogether.
